I’m going to be completely transparent with you right now. It’s time for a little honesty. My self-esteem has always suffered a bit. Right now, I am probably more self-conscious about how I look than I have ever been. I hate that I gained a little bit of weight last year. I kind of miss my long hair. My butt is too big, my stomach is too soft, my lips are too thin, and my eyes are too droopy. My husband tells me I’m gorgeous, and I know he believes it, but when I try to see what he sees when he looks at me, I focus on all the flaws instead.
And the truth is, I know I’m not alone. I know that many women do the same. I get it. I understand.
That’s why I used to avoid getting in front of my camera. I didn’t want anyone to see the same flaws that grab my attention every time I pass a mirror and check myself out…or a window (you do it too…don’t lie).
But the main reason I have always loved photography is that photos are not just for documenting a person’s appearance. The best photos are the ones that document the emotions felt by the people in them. And the more photos I took, the more I realized that my personal photos are not for everyone else in the world to see and judge. My photos are for my children…and my children think I’m perfect.
When my children look back at photos from this time in their lives, they won’t see skinny lips or droopy eyes. Instead, they will see a mama who loves them to the depths of her soul. They won’t see my double chin. Instead, they will see my head thrown back in laughter. The rest of the world doesn’t have to see those photos. I don’t have to open myself up to judgement from others, if I don’t want. Photographs shouldn’t be taken simply to have something to show off on Instagram (although I DO show off my cute kiddos whenever possible). Photographs should be taken because you want your children to have photos of your love for them. And you should look at those photos and love yourself in them. You’re more beautiful than you think you are, and in the eyes of your children, you are the most beautiful person in the world.
I like looking at photos of myself when I was younger and laughing over my giant bows and goofy grin. However, the photos I treasure most are the photos of me with my beautiful mother, who is still the most beautiful woman in the world in my eyes.
Just like you.
Don’t have photos taken with your kiddos for your Instagram followers or Facebook friends. Don’t do it for grandparents or your aunt in California or just because you need a new photo to hang on the wall.
Do it for yourself. Do it for your kids. Try to love photos of yourself–no matter what–because your children will love them, but if you hate the way you look, you don’t have to share them. I can guarantee you that someday those photos will be priceless to your children. They will love the photos you take of them when they are older, but they will absolutely treasure the photos of you WITH them when they are older.
